Agile Pain Points and Adoption Trends

white paper

For many, the promise of delivering higher business value with a faster time to market drives organizations to adopt Agile practices. While numerous studies, as well as our own observations at AccuRev, confirm Agile software development processes deliver these benefits and are growing in popularity, the results of recent surveys show that there are unique challenges and changing priorities at every stage of Agile adoption and the development process. This study showcases the shift in key Agile pain points as Agile processes are increasingly deployed throughout and organization. The survey of nearly 1,000 developers, testers, product managers, and other business professionals was conducted by leading Agile software and solutions vendors AccuRev, UrbanCode, and Rally.

The survey of nearly 1,000 US, Canadian, and European respondents was conducted at a series of Agile seminars over the past twelve months. The survey asked about top pain points when using Agile and level of Agile adoption within each organization. The survey listed 18 different problem areas respondents were having when planning or using Agile within a development life cycle - from capturing requirements to tracking progress to lack of automated deployments (for a complete list of Agile problem areas asked in the survey, please see the note at the end of this document). The survey also tracked five different levels of Agile adoption: No plans, Planning, Piloting, Scaling, and Mostly/all Agile.
